Carolyn – It amazes me that some companies pour hundreds of thousands of dollars (sometimes millions) into their Intranet, but don’t hold it to the same performance metrics as they would a high-paid executive. The key to is measure periodically so the ROI can be established. So many folks ask about the ROI before the spend is ever made (which is just an estimate or projection), yet they fail to go back afterward and establish the true ROI. Maybe they don’t want to know, sometimes

Hi Sean – great content. I always enjoy your blog posts. I especially liked the comparison to an intranet’s performance vs. an employee. Brilliant! If I had such an under-performing employee, they would be gone and I would be sure to not make the same mistake twice. It’s way too costly for my business to make poor hiring decisions. Odd that many companies still pitch out big dollars for intranet software and then provide no follow-through, coaching, training, or performance measurements and incentives. Maybe if companies were to treat their intranets more like they do an employee, we would see a different set of answers to your questions on the intranet experience.

Hi Sean – excellent article and I agree with your tips. I also think it’s a great idea to conduct annual intranet performance reviews – you can’t improve what you don’t measure. I liked the comparison with conducting a staff performance review.

For intranet managers wanting to conduct a review, the Worldwide Intranet Challenge (WIC) provides an oppotrtunity to do this. It’s basically an online survey desgined to obtain and benchmark feedback from intranet end users. 12000 people from 40 organisations have participated so far. There is no cost to participate.
